Writeup by Ivan

In 2019, my studio Types & Symbols Kickstarted and published a redesigned and lightly revised version of The Conflict of the Ages, a set of 5 books originally published between 1890 and 1917. Written by Ellen G. White, one of the founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church who claimed to have received visions from God, the books, and their legacy, can use a little bit of context to fully appreciate.

The teaser for the show.

To this end, we produced a very niche, semi-narrative, explanatory podcast. We reached out to Adventist historians, leaders, and members, conducted pre-interviews, scheduled, interviewed, wrote scripts, edited, sound designed, created custom scores, and published eleven full episodes.

FOCUS Cover

A very staged photo we took for our alumni magazine.

Recording studio

Our actual recording space. Aside from the discomfort and mess, closets are pretty great spaces to record from.

Some of the topics we explored included a controversy in the 70s and 80s around accusations of plagiarism, Ellen White’s views on race, and the specific ways that she and her team put together The Conflict of the Ages series.
